If the world was truly a rational place, men would ride sidesaddle. ~Rita Mae Brown

General Reference

A colt is a young male horse, under the age of four. An older male horse is called either a "stallion",
if left intact, or a "gelding", if cut. A young male horse is considered a colt even if he is gelded.
The verb 'to geld' refers to the process of neutering a stallion.

A young female horse is called a filly until age four, and a mare thereafter.

Measuring Height

The highest point of a horse is the top of its head (called a poll).
As a horse can move its head up and down it is hard to take an accurate measurement from the ground to the top of its head.
The height of a horse is therefore measured in a vertical line from the ground to the withers (at the base of the neck).

One hand = 4 inches ***
If a horse is more than an exact number of hands high (hh), the extra inches are given after a decimal point
e.g. 14 hands 2 inches is written as 14.2 hh. There are no such measurements as 15.4 hands.. as every 4th inch begins a new 'hand'.

Below is a table that converts the average height of horses to inches, and feet
